I pine for flavors I have never known,
but I would step back into time to taste
my mother’s meat loaf and the cherries
that she canned. I like
to think that I could go
back out to the garage and there would be
a jar of them still rimed with dust, up on
the shelf, where I stood tiptoe peering in
the dim. You know the shelf
I mean… the one where all the tastes
of childhood go
to haunt us
later on.
